1974. When Mills Lane was working on his books on ante-bellum southern
architecture, I suggested that he investigate Thomas K. Wharton of New
Orleans, who had lived in Holly Springs in the mid-1840s, as the possible
architect of Airliewood. Rather
than investigating, Lane instead made the statement in print that Wharton
might have been the architect. Later, I read Wharton's diary
for the 1850s in the New York Public Library. There is no mention
of the Coxes or of Holly Springs. Wharton clearly had no hand in
the Coxe mansion.
