Harpers Weekly
drawings These drawings, signed by A. Simplot, were published in Harper's Weekly on January 10, 1863, just three weeks after Van Dorn's raid on Grant's storage supplies being stockpiled in Holly Springs to support his thrust into Vicksburg. The Mississipi Central Railroad depot (top, left) was the focal point of unloading of stores and ammunition shipped for warehousing in the Masonic Lodge, the Presbyterian Church and the Jones-McElwain Foundry, identified in the drawing (top, right) as the Rebel Armory. The bottom drawing shows a scene of the Square in 1862 with the courthouse and three story Masonic Lodge at the right. Buildings on the left still stand today on the south side of the Square. |
